Christmas in Cornwall Yuletide 2011 the are so many activities for people spending Christmas in Cornwall and the New Year. Partying and fancy dress in Newquay. Trying one of the amazing restaurants in St Ives or a quiet cafe in Fowey. Perhaps seeing the Christmas season catch landed in Mevagissey Harbour. For those brave enough, how about a Christmas swim in the sea at Polzeath or further south at Watergate Bay? How about the Christmas menu at Rick Stein's varous restaurants in Padstow. You may want to catch the famous Fisherman's Friends of Port Isaac singing Christmas carols or maybe, for the energetic, how about a surf in Bude or further south in Perranporth? After Christmas, the infamous Boxing Day sales in the numerous shops in Truro and Falmouth (how about a post Xmas bargain in Trago Mills to wish someone a happy new year)? Cornish surfing at Christmas and the New Year is not for the faint hearted, the Atlantic sea temperatures in Cornwall start to drop quickly after October. Despite the chilly South west water temperatures the popular surf destinations of Newquay, Polzeath, Hayle and St Ives are guaranteed to have some surfers in the water, maybe even some brave Christmas-time holiday makers having a surf lesson on Fistral Beach. As the winter draws in, the west country weather can change considerably; after a strong easterly wind blows for a few days you might be lucky enough to see some waves on the south coast around Falmouth (including the reef at Gyllyngvase Beach, Swanpool and if you are lucky a wedge at Maenporth). On a big New Year south-west swell you will see the breaks at Porthleven, Praa Sands and spots around Penzance light up;these breaks can get busy especially around the Christmas holidays so take care in the water and respect the line-up. Further west the usual calm beauty of Land's End is shattered as the tip of Cornwall takes a battering in Christmas-time storms, almost everyday at Sennen Cove and north at Gwenver will see huge swells rolling in. For surfers in the know there is usually a spot nearby where you can get your festive wave fix! If you are really lucky, spend Christmas in Cornwall and try to spot Santa catching a wave on his one horse open sleigh! Maybe on New Year's eve you might be able to share a cornish cider or two with him!! Cornish Santa - only a few special people know about the magic of Christmas in Cornwall. Hidden away at the tip of the south-west with difficult to read roads sign, Santa has always had a problem navigiating around the Cornish countryside. Famously in 1986 Santa got confused between the cornish resorts of St Ives, Newquay and Padstow and he missed-delivered Xmas presents to the Children. Luckily, after this mix-up, the Christmas Santa Trade Union decided to employ a local Cornishman to assist Santa Claus with the delivery of Christmas presents - and so was born Cornish Santa.

Solve that tricky Christmas present problem!

Now that you've booked your Christmas break in Cornwall and selected your well equipped property - the last thing you need to do is to have to load up your car with lots of large, bulky, odd shaped presents. Think about activity days and sports vouchers as Christmas presents for your loved ones. During the Christmas break, perhaps there is more time to spend learning a new skills or honing some existing ones.

Contact the thrill seeking staff at the Extreme Academy in Watergate Bay to see what they have to offer over the Christmas holiday. Activities likely to be on offer include wave ski-ing, kite surfing or mountain boarding on a hill ! Unusual activities for certain and just the thing for a Christmas present and better than several pairs of socks or slippers!

During Christmas in Cornwall, the beach will not be too crowded as everybody else will be at the sales. Where would you prefer to be? These activities could be for just one solo adventurer or a group of like minded friends.

Lessons are available on Boxing Day but these do get booked up very early so if you do want to give a lesson as a present do phone ahead and book - 01637 860840.

Spectator sports fans are also catered for as the staff at 'The Beach Hut' will be delighted to serve warming, hot chocolate and other delicious drinks or better still revive the aching limbs of the thrill seekers and treat them to some tasty treats after their energetic activities.

Where's the Party - the New Year's Eve Party?

You may not have associated Cornwall with a vibrant party atmosphere but if you visit some Cornish towns on New Year's Eve you will certainly change your mind. There's something for everyone at Christmas in Cornwall - slightly riotous street parties or something slightly quieter and sophisticated.

Holidaymakers and locals looking for a buzzing, vibrant party atmosphere should head to Newquay. The advice is to wear fancy dress - the more outlandish the better. Celebrations go on for hours and last for ages. For the young and the young at heart, this is definitely the place to be!

Fancy dress is also a possibility, but not compulsory, for the New Year celebrations in St Ives. If the tide is out there is plenty of space for all revellers. In St Ives the road at the bottom of Treganna Hill is closed so that party goers can assemble safely. The bells start to welcome in the New Year and this is the signal for the magnificent, colourful firework display.

For something a bit different and definitely quieter, think about making a booking at one of the hotels or restaurants in Falmouth. Perhaps the Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth ( 01326 312440 ) is the place to celebrate. Not so much fancy dress here but more black tie ! A booking at the Harbourside restaurant or the Riverbank Suite will ensure a meal to remember .

Enjoy the New Year's Eve party atmosphere and for those with a strong constitution and boundless energy head out to the many Cornish restaurants and enjoy a sea view and New Years Day lunch. After all it is only once a year!
